Hi there,
I’m Sophie Grindlay @concretecrisps
I’m a multidisciplinary artist-designer specialising in screen, sublimation, and digitally printed textiles, hand rendered design, and embroidery.
Stories expressed in colour and humour, created with textural layers are my gig.
Growing up in Peterborough, a Ken Loach style of town, gave me an interest in people, the stories they tell and the social issues that impact them. This combined with an overtly obsessive penchant for texture and colour, and a curiosity for pattern has fuelled my passion to create and a desire to assist and prioritise the human experience.
I tend to render my designs by slicing and layering materials. Acrylic paint attacked by Posca and crayons. Chewing gum embroidery on net curtains, watercolours submerged in wax arguing with brightly coloured Japanese clay. Shapes and colours rave together forming an image or object reimagined into print design and art.
These social narratives take the form of collaged paper or fabric wall pieces and textural sculptures. They have been exhibited in galleries internationally and displayed within architecture environments such as Heathrow airport, I have also designed bold digitally printed textiles for homeware stores ‘Not Just a shop’ in London, and created ‘Pandemic Pillows’ for Nicolls gallery and the ‘Barras Market’ Glasgow.
Navigating my design practice responsibly is important, through repurposing objects and textiles and exploring less harmful ways to create and print. I find joy in collaborating on community projects, facilitating workshops and using unusual materials to open up dialogues within my community and public spaces.
Collaborations + Commissions + Bespoke Design + Customised Textiles + more.
